Wealden Police News and Alerts

Patrols Last Weekend

Another busy weekend for officers on B section across the division last weekend, which saw your teams attending reassurance visits to victims of crime as well as joint partner agency visits with local councils to both residents experiencing and causing anti-social behaviour (ASB).

Joint partnership discussions also took place, with officers meeting local dog wardens following reports of dangerous dogs in Crowborough.

A number of patrols across areas of North Wealden yielded intelligence of both drug use and dealing, which will be investigated, as well as responded to by planning future street meetings and foot patrols to address local concerns.

In addition to patrols, officers also visited a number of businesses on their areas, as well as obtaining CCTV to help identify any suspects following a recent spate of ASB in Hailsham and Crowborough.

As we head into the weekend, the safety and welfare of our communities remains a top priority, if you see or hear anything your teams need to know about, please call 101 or report online at the time - always call 999 in an emergency/crime in action.

Burglaries This Week

Whilst we have not seen any residential burglaries this week across the district, we have received two reports of attempted thefts from rural farm properties - as such we are issuing the below advice to owners of large outbuildings, stables or farm properties.

-Mark your property:

You can put any kind of mark on your property to make it unique and so you always know which item is yours.

One option is to mark it with the number of your address followed by your postcode, eg 13 EW1 2EE.

Most organisations recognise UK post codes, so they can identify your property and return it to you. If you just mark it with a name or symbol it doesn’t tell the police who owns it or where it came from.

-Make a property log:

Make a property list of your valuable items, detailing the make, model, serial number, value and description.

Take photographs of all your valuables and note any distinguishing marks, including where and how you’ve property marked it, load them onto your computer or keep them on a memory stick.

By having these records, if your property is stolen, you’ll have as much information as possible to give to the police and pass to retailers and other organisations to help find your property.

-Consider fitting machinery and vehicles with a tracking device and/or tagging system:

Items such as quad bikes, sit-on lawn mowers and rotavators are very desirable to thieves.

Consider making them difficult to remove by, shackling them together, or chaining them to a hitch secured to the ground or strong fabric of a building.

Lock or immobilise vehicles and equipment when you’re not using them. Remove keys from cars, tractors and any other vehicles you leave unattended.

If you’re using a tracking company you must still contact police to create a crime report number. (The crime report number usually (but not always) has seven digits and today’s date. The tracking company will need this to call for police assistance).

If you see or hear anything suspicious, or notice persons in areas they shouldn't be, especially around farm or more rural locations, report your instincts at the time to Police online or by calling 101.

The theft of heavy machinery is a considerable problem and is sometimes the result of organised crime.

These thefts are often from farms, woodland and domestic rural locations as well as building sites, and range from sit-on mowers and quad bikes up to very large plant and construction machinery.

If you believe a crime in taking place, or there is immediate threat to life or property always call 999.

Patrols This Week

A number of patrols have taken place across the district, with officers from your Neighbourhood Policing Team visiting local areas to meet residents and businesses; to identify crime trends, and offer both reassurance and crime prevention tools and advice to help continue keeping your communities safe.

Earlier this week, officers spent time in Pevensey Bay conducting both foot and vehicle patrols in the area, speaking to local residents about any concerns they have; and visiting a number of community buildings to offer updates on recent crimes in the area, as well as offer their support and advice as we head into the weekend.

Patrols continue into the weekend, and whilst we can not be everywhere, we could be anywhere - if you see or hear anything in your communities you think we need to know about, report it to us at the time, remember you can contact us 24/7, 365 online or by calling 101.

In an emergency always call 999.

Arrests This Week

Already this week a number of arrests have been made across the district for various offences; including 3 separate arrests for drink driving, in Heathfield, Hailsham and one in Pevensey Bay.

Over the Winter/Christmas period we ran an enhanced campaign (in addition to road safety checks 365 days a year) with both promotional and enforcement activities around drink and drug driving.

During the campaign over 230 individuals were arrested for drink and/or drug driving on the roads of Sussex.

In keeping with previous campaigns, those convicted and disqualified for their offences are being named to raise awareness and provide a deterrent to others from getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.

Details of those drink-drivers who have been convicted during our Winter campaign can be found online here.

Happy New Year 2023

Wealden Police News and Alerts

Happy New Year 2023

It’s not always flashing blue lights and baddies.

The last shift of 2022 for your B Section team included several call outs including assisting vulnerable members of the community and responding to your calls of ASB.

Over the New Year weekend, B section attended a call to a vulnerable lady who had taken a fall in the road in Buxted and could not be moved as it was feared she had broken her hip.

PCSOs were quick to close the road at each end to ensure her safety until paramedics arrived on scene. A number of foot patrols were conducted in the area of Jarvis Brook, Crowborough following reports of anti-social behaviour (ASB) and criminal damage to vehicles – two males have since been arrested following damage caused to a number of vehicles in the area.

Later Officers were made aware of an elderly man who had returned home from a stay in hospital but was unable to obtain wood for his log burner to heat his property. A few phone calls later, and the kindness of a local councillor who volunteered a couple of bags of logs made sure the man could keep warm over the New Year period.

Friday evening whilst on Op Blitz (ASB targeting patrols), teams were called to Goldsmiths Miniature Railway in Crowborough after reports of a male was seen with a bus stop pole going into the railway.

On attendance Officers came across a group of six youngsters, details were obtained as part of their ongoing investigations with the business and council to determine if any damaged was caused.

A further call was received of concerns for a male who hadn’t been seen for a while, and his mail was piling up. PCSO’s visited the property and following a door knock were happy to report that the male was all in order and no concerns were noted.

Teams have also been out across the district, owing to the recent heavy rainfall and winter weather causing issues on the roads, including trees down, potholes and flooding in a few areas.

Wishing you all a very Happy New Year from B section based at Crowborough.

Appeal for ID

Do you recognise this man and woman?

We’d like to speak to them in relation to the theft of four bottles of champagne worth more than £200 from Waitrose in Croft Road, Crowborough, on November 17.

Officers investigating the theft believe the two people pictured have information that could assist with enquiries and ask them, or anyone who recognises them, to get in touch.

Information can be passed to police online or by calling 101 quoting serial 507 of 18/11.

Fraud Newsletter – January Edition

Each month we see many incidents of fraudsters targeting our residents to defraud them. We’re working hard to prevent this and support vulnerable victims of fraud or scams. By following our tips and encouraging family, friends and colleagues to do so too, you can reduce the risk of becoming a victim.

Software Service Scams

Sussex and Surrey received 214 reports of Software Service fraud in the last year relating to vulnerable victims.

Computer software service fraud occurs when fraudsters posing as legitimate companies, such as your broadband provider, Microsoft etc contact you by telephone, email or pop messages to tell you that there’s a problem with your computer or router which needs fixing. They might say that they can fix the problem for a fee, or alternatively they can compensate you for the problem you are experiencing.

Sussex Residents Lose £2m To Courier And Impersonator Fraud - More Radio

In one case a 76-year-old Male from East Sussex reported having issues with his computer whilst shopping online. The victim’s computer was freezing when a pop-up message appeared on the screen suggesting the victim ring a telephone number for tech support. The victim called the number provided and was asked to provide remote access to his computer so that they could fix the problem. The victim followed the callers’ instructions which led to the fraudster gaining full control of the victim’s computer. The fraudster was then able to access the victim’s online banking account where they transferred £590 to another bank account.

How to protect yourself:

· Legitimate companies such as Microsoft will never ask you for remote access to your computer or devices

· Do not download software or apps on the request of a caller

· A genuine service provider will never call you out of the blue regarding computer issues

· Be wary of pop-up messages that may appear on your computer or devices suggesting you call a telephone number

· If you receive a call like this, hang up. ‘Take Five’ and verify via a trusted method

How to keep your devices safe

Over the Christmas period many of us may have been gifted, upgraded, or brought in the sale a new device such as a mobile phone, laptop, or tablet. It is important that all your devices are fully protected and used safely to protect you from fraudsters who may try to hack your devices or manipulate you into giving them access to your devices so that they can steal your personal data and even access your finances.

· Make sure your device has reputable anti-virus software. Without these, your device has no defence to identify or block infections

· Make sure you make regular backups of your data and information

· Always update software and applications when prompted. Don’t ignore prompts and reminders to update all your devices as they contain important fixes which will help keep hackers out. You can make things simpler by activating automatic updates

· Turn on 2-Step Verification. 2-Step Verification adds an added layer of protection by asking for more information to prove your identity

Amazon Scams

Sussex and Surrey Police have seen multiple reports of fraud in relation to various Amazon scams being conducted by fraudsters.

Fraudsters may contact you claiming to be from Amazon asking for you to pay a subscription fee, claiming there is a problem with your Amazon account or asking you to act urgently due to an unauthorised purchase on your account.

In one case a 77-year-old Male from Banstead reported receiving a telephone call from someone claiming to be from Amazon. The caller explained that the victim was owed a £95 refund for an Amazon Prime subscription overpayment and that they would process a refund immediately. The caller then explained that they had accidently refunded £9500 instead of £95 and asked the victim to transfer the £9500 back to a given bank account. The victim did this believing a genuine mistake had been made but later realised he had been scammed as no refund had been made.

How to protect yourself:

· Remember, if you received correspondence regarding an order you weren't expecting, you can verify orders by logging into your Amazon account. Only legitimate purchases will appear in your order history - and Customer Service is available 24/7 to assist

· Don’t open attachments or click on the links within any unsolicited emails you receive, and never respond to emails that ask for your personal or financial details

· Never part with your financial details at the request of an unsolicited caller

· You can report suspicious communications to Amazon here: Report a Suspicious Communication - Amazon Customer Service

· For more tips on how to determine if an email, phone call, text message or website is really from amazon please see their advice: Identifying Whether an Email, Phone Call, or Text Message is from Amazon - Amazon Customer Service

Locksmith scams

Sussex Police have seen a number of recent reports in relation to bogus locksmiths targeting victims.

Please be aware of bogus locksmiths and only use companies you have used before or companies someone you know, and trust has recommended to you.

You can also use the Master Locksmiths Association website to find a trusted locksmith: www.locksmiths.co.uk

· Remember, always ask for ID. If you suspect the ID might be fake, take the time to establish their identity by calling their employer

· Say No. Never feel pressured to say yes and do your research. A passing trader can provide you with their details, where you can then look them up and seek advice from someone you trust.

· Criminals may use excuses to enter your home to steal or charge inflated prices for ‘repairs’. If someone you don’t know offers to do work at your property or sell you goods, say ‘no thanks’ and shut the door.

Sussex Police - We have had 392 reports of courier fraud against vulnerable victims across Sussex, so far this year, with a total loss of £1.54 million. Courier or impersonator fraud is

Suspect you or someone you know has been victim to a scam?

December 10, 2022

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

As well as supporting Police Officer colleagues in protecting your communities, and supporting investigations; your Neighbourhood PCSOs also get to go out across your towns and villages, to meet people, build links with local communities and offer advice and support.

Last weekend your local PCSOs joined residents and shoppers in Uckfield for their annual late night Christmas shopping event.

Despite the rain late evening, it was lovely to see so many people out and about supporting the local businesses in our town, as well as all the amazing stalls filled with Christmas gift ideas, and festive treats; what a great way for the local community to start heading into the Christmas Period.

If you're out and about at any Christmas Markets or festive events this coming December and see or hear something that doesn't seem right, please notify staff/stewards or the Police at the time.

Always call 999 in an emergency.

Op Sceptre - Cadet Knife Sweeps

Last weekend your Sussex Police Cadets conducted knife sweeps of local parks, skate parks and open public spaces across the district, including in Horam and Hailsham.

As part of our continued work around Op Sceptre (keeping communities safe from knife crime); Cadets and their leaders spent time searching for discarded or hidden knives, and other potential weapons, as well as speaking about the dangers and consequences of knife crime with park users and passers by.

Knife crime has tragic consequences to the victim, loved ones and the local community.

Sussex is a safe place to live, but we recognise the importance of taking proactive action with our partners and other organisations to keep Sussex safe and feeling safe.

If you have information about knife crime, you can report online, or anonymously to CrimeStoppersUK.

In an emergency always call 999.

Op Limit - Drink drive checks this month

A National operation involving all police forces in England and Wales sees an increase in our presence on the roads to coincide with the football world cup, and the lead up to Christmas to target and catch drink and drug drivers continues this week.

Officers from your Neighbourhood Policing Team were out late into the night this week in areas of both Polegate, Hailsham and Hellingly carrying out both drink tests and drug swipes- teams are pleased to report no drivers failed tests during the course of our checks.

Whilst we can not be everywhere, we could be anywhere, and continue to encourage members of the public to report habitual drink and drug drivers to us, either online or to 101.

In 2020 (latest published figures) an estimated 6,480 people were killed or injured in the UK when one of the drivers involved was over the drink-drive limit.

Members of the public can also call 999, or text 65999 if they witness drink or drug driving in real-time.

Weekend Patrols

As we head into the weekend, the safety and welfare of our communities remains our top priority.

Already this week a number of arrests have been made across the district, for varied offences, including; criminal damage, drink driving, and common assault.

As well as arrests, various patrols have also taken place across the district, including our Op Limit drink drive checks, community safety patrols and patrols of our roads network.

Late night last weekend whilst on patrols officers witnessed a vehicle travelling up the B2192, whilst contravening the red light; subsequently the driver was pulled over and issued a fixed penalty ticket and now risks receiving points on their licence.

Patrols and Police Operations continue into the weekend, whilst we can not be everywhere, we could be anywhere and we continue to encourage local communities to report anything we need to know about either online or to 101 at the time.

Always call 999 in an emergency/crime in action.

Patrols this week

Already this week a number of patrols have taken place across the district, with officers from your Neighbourhood Policing Team visiting local areas to meet residents and businesses; to identify crime trends, and offer both reassurance and crime prevention tools and advice to help continue keeping your communities safe.

Earlier this week, officers visited both Alceston, Selmeston and surrounding villages; conducting both foot and vehicle patrols in the area, speaking to local residents about any concerns they have; and parking up in areas reported by residents to keep an eye out for any suspicious activities.

As we head into the weekend, the safety and welfare of our local communities remains a top priority - if you see or hear anything in your communities you think we need to know about, report it to us at the time, remember you can contact us 24/7, 365 online or by calling 101.

In an emergency always call 999.

Winter Driving Warning

With more expected cold weather a reminder to take it slow out on the roads. Did you know, stopping distances can be up to 10 times longer on icy roads?

Advice for drivers during winter:

Make sure your car is ready for winter, check that your tyres, brakes, windscreens, wiper blades and windows are free from defects and clean

Drive to the road conditions - road conditions can change without warning, stopping distances will be affected by the weather

Make sure your windows are clean and aren't misted up, making sure there is no snow and ice on your windows before you set off

When the roads are icy, drive at a slow speed in a high gear, accelerate and brake very gently

Driving distracted (for example, using a Sat Nav) can cause additional stress, it is not only dangerous to you, but also your passengers and other road users.

Let's Support Each Other

Not only will towns and cities be busy with festive activities, but people will also be out enjoying the football.

Let’s look out for each other during this busy time and stay alert in your surroundings.

If you see anything that doesn’t feel right report it in confidence.

Don’t assume someone else will do it, trust your instincts and make that call.

Your actions could save lives.

Report online at www.gov.uk/ACT.

In an emergency call 999.
